Welcome to the Blog!

Welcome to The Carolinas Radio & TV Blog.I’m hoping we can have a discussion about some of the history, current operations and trends in broadcasting in North and South Carolina. I worked in radio for 13 years, before leaving for a position in the public sector, where I now manage Websites and other new media technologies (including podcasts).

Much is changing in the broadcasting industry. With the advent of digital and HD formats, the quality of signals entering our lives is better than ever. But these signals are facing increasing competition from media that involves its user, either in an active discussion or by allowing the user to determine when, where, and how they interact. We’re seeing institutions in the industry change (Lincoln Financial shopping its broadcast properties, for example) and the face of broadcasting will be changed tremendously in the next 10 years. Is it for better or worse? What about these new technologies: are users getting more choice or are we marginalizing audiences into such small niches that our society loses its cohesion? What about the “new” Fairness Doctrine that is being bantered around Capitol Hill? Should cable television  be under the same types of restrictions as broadcasters when it comes to adult-themed materials and the times of day that they may be shown?

As you see, we have lots to talk about and discuss. I will give my opinions on issues, but I welcome others who are interested to join in the discussion. Please share your thoughts and ideas on what has happened, what is happening, and what the future holds right here.
